PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Quality recreational opportunities are essential to the health and well-being of every community. Precinct One is partnering with the Harris County Flood Control District to provide trails and amenities around Harris County Flood Control District’s Curtis M. Graves Detention Basin. A small trail would also connect surrounding neighborhoods just north of the detention basin to this trail network.

Curtis Graves is a civil rights pioneer and one of the first African-Americans to serve as a member of the Texas House of Representatives since the nineteenth century. He served from 1967 to 1973. He later went on to hold a long career at NASA and is a renowned photographer.

PROJECT BENEFITS:

While the Homestead Detention Basin is primarily designed to mitigate flooding along Hunting Bayou, the site can also provide much-needed natural greenspace to a historically underserved neighborhood. The addition of a park and trails can provide healthy recreational opportunities for people of all ages.
