Harris County Commissioner Ellis Expresses His Disappointment in METRO’s Refusal to Pursue Nearly $1B in Federal Funding for 25-Mile University Corridor Bus Rapid Transit

25 Jun, 24

“I amdeeply disappointed in the METRO Board for abandoning the effort to pursue over$900 million in federal funds to construct the University Corridor BRT. The people of Harris County specifically, and overwhelmingly, supported theproject in a 2019 bond election.

Thefact that METRO officials have already told the Federal Transit Administrationthey would not seek funds for the project is a betrayal to the people of HarrisCounty and the communities METRO is sworn to represent.

“Theboard has made a dangerous decision to forego the tens of millions of dollarsand public outreach used to develop this project.  Disregarding the needfor the University Corridor is a big mistake and only contributes to the many transportationand environmental problems facing our County. This is a big mistake and onlycontributes to the many transportation and environmental problems facing ourCounty.

Iunderstand this action may have seriously damaged any future ability to seekthese funds again.  I hope the METRO Board will find a way to correct thisgrievous error in judgment and return to their mission of providing access tocommunities who need it most.”
