Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis on Tuesday voiced strong support for International Longshoremen's Association members and their right to peacefully strike for better wages and rights on the job. Below is Commissioner Ellis’s statement:
“The Port of Houston is vital to our state’s economy and supports over 1.5 million jobs across Texas. The men and women who work tirelessly to keep our goods moving seamlessly through the Port of Houston and ports nationwide are a critical part of our economies and communities.
I stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in labor and working people everywhere in their fight for better wages and rights on the job.
Longshoremen are seeking what all workers deserve – decent pay for a day’s work, job security, and safe working conditions. Their voices should be heard and respected. I respect their right to peacefully strike and hope that good faith negotiations resume as soon as possible.”
