WHAT: Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and labor leaders will outline a proposed labor-managed apprenticeship program that Commissioners Court is expected to vote on later Tuesday. The proposed $9.1 million investment, funded by American Rescue Plan Act, will create a partnership with Harris County and Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation. This historic program, believed to the first of its kind for a Texas county, will train over 1,500 people through labor apprenticeships in the construction, public transportation, and live entertainment industries. Building on previous efforts spearheaded by Commissioner Ellis, this program exemplifies Harris County’s commitment to increasing economic opportunity for all. It will be a win for Harris County, working families, and a thriving economic future.
