Harris County Commissioner Ellis, Houston Mayor Turner to Help Unveil Mural as Part of Announcement that Downtown will be Transformed to Open-Air Gallery
Art Walk Curated by Street Art for Mankind Covers Over Mile-long Stretch of Downtown Commercial Building Walls
WHAT: Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, downtown leaders, and artists will unveil a mural during an announcement of the Big Art, Bigger Change open-air gallery that includes large art pieces “block by block.” With funding from the Houston Downtown Management District and corporate partner TotalEnergies, the exhibition is co-produced by Street Art for Mankind (SAM), a global nonprofit organization that uses the power of art to trigger social change.
Commissioner Ellis played a major part in the art walk’s conception when he happened upon a #ZeroHungerMurals by renowned artist Dragon76 on the backside of downtown’s Hampton Inn. That led to a conversation that sparked the Downtown District’s Board of Directors to unanimously approve an initiative to fund multiple large-scale murals.
