All neighborhoods deserve to be safe from flooding, but historic underinvestment has left Scenic Woods/North Forest vulnerablewithin a high-risk 10-year floodplain. Thanks to the efforts of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Harris County, we nowhave an opportunity to build a new stormwater detention basin to protect our neighbors. This project is our chance to correct theseinequities by providing essential flood infrastructure long needed in these communities.
A Critical Opportunity for Our Community
Available Now: $3.7 million in federal funding to protect our community from flooding.
Partnership Needed: Working together - community members, Houston Community College (HCC), and Harris County - we can make this happen.
Urgent Timeline: We must decide together by December 31, 2024, or our community loses this opportunity.
Benefits for Everyone
Protecting Lives: Reduces flooding risk for 152 Scenic Woods/North Forest homes and 1.5 miles of road inundation.
Safer Future: This project upgrades flood protection from a 10-year to a 50-year floodplain, ensuring long-term safety and resilience for our neighborhoods.
Smart Land Use: 12 undeveloped acres would remain for future HCC North Forest expansion, similar to successful projects at other campuses.
Why This Location is Necessary
Only Viable Option: Effectively addresses flooding in Scenic Woods/North Forest, while alternative sites primarily reduce water levels in other areas upstream.
Prevents Displacement: Avoids the need for up to 150 costly and disruptive residential buyouts, preserving community integrity.
Ready to Build: Plans are in place and can move quickly ahead of future storms.
Balanced Approach: Preserves space for HCC North Forest’s future plans while reducing flood risk.
Working Together for Our Future
Without this project, we risk losing $3.7 million for community protection, leaving our neighborhoods in a high risk 10-year floodplain and vulnerable to future storm damage. Your support helps secure our future. Join us in building a safer North Forest/Scenic Woods for generations to come.
